God, knowing our best at best is second best,
firmly indulges our comic awkwardness ‑
as when our grimy hands baptise; one dying
soothes another with hope and psalms and oil;
or we make banquet of bread and wine
and sing our wistful songs on alien soil;
while through it all the Spirit shyly sings ‑
her clarity opaque to all but clowns.
