What you need to Know and Vaughan Park Disclaimer

What you need to Know - Parnell to Puhoi Hikoi 25th to 27th March 2018

Terrain Traverse Challenges

This is a quite challenging Hikoi that requires at least a moderate level of walking fitness. Participants who do not have extended walking distance experience should train with several 3hr (15 km) walks in undulating terrain in the weeks leading up to the Hikoi. Footwear with stiff soles and good tread is recommended.

Day 1

From Parnell to Vaughan Park (26 km) is mostly on paved tracks, but with considerable undulation crossing headlands for the final 10 km. This is a quite arduous distance. The North Shore Coastal track we will use has some clambering over uneven rocks for a section that requires a good level of agility and balance. The tide will be well in when we cover this section so if conditions are unfavourable we will revert to walking sections on adjacent streets.

Day 2

The Okura Bush Track (7 km) is a well formed route, a mixture of boardwalk, beach and earth tracks with reasonably steep ascents and descents. Whangaparaoa to Orewa (12 km) is on footpaths.

Day 3

Orewa to Waiwera (2 hr) is a coastal walk. There are rock sections that are very slippery underfoot. In other places there are uneven rock outcrops that need to be clambered over. Good agility and balance is required. Waiwera to Wenderholm is a steep ascent and descent over the headland on earth track.

The Puhoi River kayak is with an incoming tide and takes around 2 hours with easy paddling.
