The Second Journey

This time she set out
at dusk, wondering how
every tree seemed to have fallen
across her path. This was

not like that other journey, Elizabeth
quickening to her sound.
                                          Now a creek
moved alongside her, blessing

what had become too heavy to bear.
She would have to trust
the water to carry her, ask
the not yet full moon, touching

her bare knee, to hold
what was still hidden from view.
