Cri de Coeur

The Rev. John Fairbrother

Cri de Coeur

If all cries were one, would the sun
dim: rays bending with force of voices filling
silence between whisper, shout and scream?

If all cries were one, would the world
hear: advantage stooping to better listen
for rhythm familiar to every heart?

If all cries were one, would the God of Abraham
respond: defying the inevitable
sceptre, despair, death and oblivion’s door?

If all cries were one, might tears of grief
sear the heart of heaven for sake
of peace becalming human storm?

If all cries were one, might compassion
become human need, listening,
respecting silence for response at depth?

If all cries were one would the sun
benefit another day or dissolve within
pain that struggle demands of life?
