The Ugly Sister

The Rev. Canon Dr. James M. McPherson

suitable for Easter Eve

We fear the Ugly Sister's godlike power
to sever all our ties and break our hearts,
to scatter and dissolve our lifetimes' work,
to challenge our pretensions and conceits.
Yet Death, like earth and water, air and fire,
can come as friend in need as well as foe;
for Nature's matrix must allow for Death
to let creation teem and throb with life.
Good Friday was the Ugly Sister's sin;
and Easter Eve, the night God reined her in.
