Anzac Day

The Rev. John Fairbrother

Anzac Day

History – our stories recall
Bleak back yard, dimly lit hall -
Memories waiting time to tell
Peace consumed in human hell
Friends, family, enemies lost
Ridiculous politics at sanity's cost.

Yes, remember those the driven
Heroic or reluctant service given
Names inscribed forever cold -
The masons' echoes - remaining bold
These marks of locals lost to hope
Let reason resist romantic trope.

To those the lost, forced to earth,
What might such a day portray
Of their worth?
